Toy Story Cake

My husbands godson, Christian, celebrated his first birthday party with a Toy Story theme. This cake took quite a few days in the making. I wanted to learn how to do color flow. I've seen it on the Wilton website (here) and so I figured I'd use that technique on this cake.

TOOLS I USED
INGREDIENTS I USED
HOW I DID IT

Color Flow Decoration. I created a pattern using Adobe Photoshop that looks like the movie title. It was easy to make. If you need one, just leave a comment here or on Facebook and I'll be happy to help. So anyway, I made the color flow decoration one (1) week in advance to give it time to harden.

2 days in advance. Made Marshmallow Fondant (MMF). I colored about half a cup of fondant, blue.

Bed Details. I knew that I was going to make a 6.5" x 9" (half of 9"x13" pan) cake for Andy's bed. So, I drew a sketch of the headboard and footboard based on this size. The centerpieces were my way of mimicking the rails on Andy's bed.

Painting. Diluted some brown gel paste coloring with water. With a medium paint brush, I painted a thin coat over all the pieces on one side only. Paint in one direction, letting the bristles on the paintbrush pull through the diluted food coloring to create a striped wood effect. (Note: Do not go back over the areas painted as this will cause the food coloring to lift off.) The first coating was little patchy. But just left it for 10 minutes to dry, then painted on another coat. Left the pieces on the parchment paper to dry completely.

Cake Board.  My husband had this slab of hardwood floor which was given to us by the company who worked on our house. Made sure I cleaned and disinfected it well even though no part of the cake would touch it.  I also cut a 10" cake circle into a rectangle to fit the cake. Then wrapped in foil. This is where I actually placed the cake.

The Bed.  Baked a 9"x13" cake. Trimmed the crust from the cake and leveled the top flat.  Cut the cake exactly in half and put one piece on top of the other. Filled and frosted the cake as usual.

I rolled out white fondant to cover 1/3 of the bed. Then rolled out the blue fondant to cover the rest. I used the stitching wheel of the Wilton Cutter Embosser to make the quilt pattern on the blue fondant. Then I used a 3" strip of white fondant to cover where the white and blue fondant "bed sheet" meet. Lifted carefully and positioned on the cake board.

Pillows. Split a log of white fondant into half. Rolled into two (2) oval shapes, then pinched up four corners on each oval to make the two pillow. Stick onto bed using fondant glue (a little bit of fondant mixed with water).

Assembly. Using dabs of brown fondant glue (fondant mixed with water and brown icing), I stuck the headboard and footboard in position with the painted side against the bed. Then painted the other side as before.

Finishing Touches.  Colored a small amount of white fondant with yellow icing color. Then used the smallest star cut-out to make little stars for the bed.  Also, rolled out white and blue fondant into long logs to make the small rug.

The parents gave me a Toy Story 2 Figure Play set to place on the cake.

    1. I don't have one. I just drew it free hand based on the size of my cake pan. When I was satisfied with my drawing, I traced it on parchment paper to make a pattern for the fondant. I hope that helps.
